Dr. Sanjiv Goenka, is the Chairman of the 7 billion dollar RP Sanjiv Goenka Group. The Group has more than 45,000 employees worldwide and over five hundred thousand shareholders.
The Group’s businesses span several sectors like Power and Natural Resources, Carbon Black, Information Technology, Retail, FMCG, Education, Media, Entertainment and Sports.
RPSG Group’s pure play Business Process Outsourcing firm Firstsource Solutions employs more than 10,000 people in the United States of America and United Kingdom making it one of the largest employers from India. In the Power segment, 120 year old company CESC serves more than 3.4 million consumers in Kolkata. Phillips Carbon Black is the largest carbon black manufacturer in India and seventh largest in the world. In the Music space, its 100 year old company Saregama has the largest trademarked collection of songs and owns close to 50 % of Indian music ever recorded. Spencer’s Retail has been serving the Indian consumers for the last 150 years. The Group owns the iconic 100 year old football club Mohun Bagan. Dr Goenka also owns the Lucknow IPL cricket team. The Group publishes the premier Fortune magazine in India.
In April 2001, Dr. Sanjiv Goenka took over as the youngest-ever President of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). He is currently the Chairman of the prestigious Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-KGP). Dr Sanjiv Goenka is a former President of the All India Management Association (AIMA) and was the youngest President of the Indian Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Goenka was conferred the World Economic Forum Global Leader for Tomorrow at Davos, Switzerland, in 1993. Some of the other awards include – Indian Business Leader of the Year at Belfast Global India Business Meet in 2013, Banga Bibhushan Award for his contribution to the state of West Bengal; (the highest Civilian Award in the State) in 2015, Distinguished Fellowship Award of Institute of Director, India at their 16th London Global Convention, 2016. He was also conferred three times Degree of Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa D Litt) from prestigious Indian Universities in 2018. He has also received the Asian Leadership Award 2019 from the Asian Association of Management Organisations. The All India Management Association ( AIMA ) bestowed the Business Leader of the Year award 2021 on Dr Sanjiv Goenka.
Dr Goenka has consistently been ranked in the top 20 in India Today’s list of 50 Most Powerful People in India over the last five years. Son of late Dr. Rama Prasad Goenka, Dr Sanjiv Goenka was born in Kolkata in 1961. Married to Preeti, they have a daughter Avarna and a son Shashwat.
