Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India has launched the national program called Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), with the vision to involve professional and higher educational institutions in the development process of rural areas in the country to achieve sustainable development and better quality of life. Based on the directives of UBA, the institute has adopted five villages in the Madarat Gram Panhcyat, Baruipur Block, South 24 Parganas, W.B. Specifically, the UBA cell conducts various activities centred around skill development, capacity building, healthcare, education, and sustainability to empower the local communities in the selected region. This initiative has created a platform where students and academic institutions contribute to nation-building and rural transformation. It strengthens the bond between academia and society, promoting inclusive growth.

Event Name: Orientation session for UBA

The orientation session for the UBA student members and faculty group was conducted by Ms. Cheryl Francis, Head, NSS, St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. Ms. Francis has long been dedicated to social outreach and community development, especially across the rural and underprivileged areas of West Bengal. This session was conducted to provide a comprehensive overview of the core objectives regarding Unnat Bharat Abhiyan. During the session, Ms. Francis highlighted the roles and responsibilities of the UBA members, emphasizing their contribution towards the successful execution of the broader mission. The session also highlighted the expectations and challenges of imitative, preparing the members for creating a meaningful impact at the ground-level. Overall, Ms. Francis shared her vast experience and passion of working for the marginalized communities and creating a long-term impact in the society.
Event Name: Workshop on “Financial Literacy & Setting up Small Businesses with Limited Capital”

The event on financial literacy and small business set-ups aimed at fostering essential knowledge and information among the self-help groups and local communities (especially women) in the selected villages of the Baruipur region. Specifically, the event comprised interactive sessions by Dr. A. Bandopadhyay and Dr. G. Roy (Faculty members, IMI Kolkata). These experts hold a lot of experience in mentoring SME businesses to achieve their desired business goals. The sessions saw participation from 48 women SHG members. During the discussions, participants expressed a strong interest in learning about government schemes, networking opportunities, investment options, and possibilities for securing bank loans to help nurture their businesses. The experts addressed the queries of the participants and shared the necessary information about financial inclusion in the current landscape. Overall, the workshop was successful in meeting its objective of generating much-needed awareness as well as empowering the local communities to explore alternate revenue streams through running small businesses. The participants were provided with certificates for successfully attending the workshop. Further, the UBA Cell team of IMI Kolkata (both faculty and student members) also visited some shops run by the women SHGs in the nearby locality.
Event Name: Tree Plantation Drive

Under the UBA program, a tree plantation drive was conducted by IMI Kolkata in the Madarat GP. This drive focused on promoting greenery and benefiting the environment in the local community areas. In this regard, the student members of UBA took to pledge to protect the environment from the harmful effects of climate change. The drive not only beautified the region but also instilled a strong sense of environmental responsibility among the local people. Regular monitoring and care of the saplings have been planned to ensure their healthy growth. The event highlighted the importance of green initiatives during the current times, especially to promote environmental sustainability.
Event Name: Medical Camp & Seminar on Women Health & Hygiene Sensitization

The UBA cell, IMI Kolkata organized a Medical Camp in collaboration with IRIS Multispecialty Hospital, supported by the Baruipur Young Men’s Association at Madarat Gram Panchayat, Baruipur. This initiative, saw active participation from students and faculty members of IMI Kolkata. The villagers also participated with great enthusiasm, with over a hundred men and women availing themselves of the healthcare services during the initiative. Students managed a smooth registration process, followed by Blood pressure, Pulmonary Function tests, and blood glucose checkups conducted by IRIS. Doctors then addressed villagers’ health concerns, while a lady doctor from IRIS provided valuable insights on women’s health, discussing essential do’s and don’ts during menstruation and pregnancy. With hundreds of villagers benefiting from the camp, the event was a great success, reinforcing the importance of serving society.
